110
Years The German Newfoundland Club
In
June 1893 the "Newfoundland Club for the Continent" was founded by
German and Swiss Newfoundland enthusiasts out of which the "Deutscher
Neufundlaender Klub"(The German Newfoundland Club) later came into
being.
The
DNK kept from the start their own breed book, in which over 42000
puppies have now been registered. Every year approximately 800 puppies
are added. Currently the Club has about 2000 members.
The
two World Wars decimated the German Newfoundland breeding dramatically.
Only a few enthusiasts could keep their dogs in these difficult times,
which enabled a fresh start for the breed.
Due
to the increasing globalisation more and more foreign dogs were
successfully introduced within the last two decades - but in return
German Newfoundlands have also been sold worldwide. The trustful
co-operation with foreign Newfoundland Clubs and breeders is -besides
the health care - a most important goal of our club.
Within
the last 30 years the health requirements have became more stringent.
Before Newfoundlands are used for breeding they must pass currently
several health checks (hips, shoulders, elbows, heart and cystinurie).
Furthermore the age limits for breeding are regulated, including a
Iimit of 6 litters per female.
We
hope that we maintain the heritage which the founders of our club
entrusted to us, that we manage everything as they would have wished
and that we ensure that our Newfoundlands - for the next 110 years as
well! - remain healthy and fit for work.
